Men’s basketball picked to finish second in CAA
The VCU men’s basketball team was picked to finish second in the CAA after votingwas tallied by league coaches, sports information directors and media was at the conference’s media day in Philadelphia.
Four starters are returning for the Rams, including Nick George (Manchester, England), who was chosen as a preseason first-team All-CAA selection. This is the second straight year George has been chosen as a preseason all-conference player.
Old Dominion, who edged VCU in last year’s conference title game, was the unanimous pick to repeat as champions.
But VCU’s 81 wins over the past four seasons made the highest total for any Division I men’s team in the state.
The women’s team, which returns only two starters from last year’s eighth-place squad, was picked to finish 10th. (See graphic below.)
Rams claim regular-season title, home-field advantage
VCU women’s soccer team could not put the ball in the net against host Hofstra Saturday, but goalkeeper Emily Niman (Pittsburgh, Pa.) kept the Pride from scoring and the match ended in a scoreless tie.
Niman stopped six shots to preserve the Rams’ seventh shutout of the season.
With their 3-0 victory over Northeastern Thursday and the tie against the Pride, the Rams earned the regular-season crown and the right to host the CAA tournament.
The Rams (9-0-2 CAA, 11-3-5) play their semifinal game 7 p.m. on Friday against the winner of fourth-seeded James Madison and fifth-seeded Old Dominion.
The results over the weekend extend the Rams’ unbeaten streak to 12 games.
Having home-field advantage in the conference in the tournament gives the team an edge because they are unbeaten at Sports Backers Stadium in their past 24 matches, tied with Notre Dame for the longest active streak in Division I women’s soccer.
