Rams shut out by Terps 3-0

The only time the VCU found the net Sunday was on an own goal by a player defending a Maryland throw-in from the corner. Allowing two goals in the second half,

The Rams fell to 1-3 on the season.

Senior forward Dominic Oduro (Accra, Ghana) had three VCU’s seven shots as the black and gold struggled offensively in the second round of the Maryland/Adidas Classic. The Rams managed just three shots on goal.

Sophomore Midfielder Matthijs Maruanaya (Alkmaar, Netherlands) and senior Defender Veit Schaidinger were both named to the all-tournament team.

Women runners shatter personal records

Two of the VCU women’s cross country team posted personal bests in times last weekend at the Lou Onesty Invitational hosted by the University of Virginia.

Sophomore Libby Little (Spotsylvania, Va./ Courtland High School) finished in 20:18.42, leading the Rams and beating her original record by two minutes.

Junior Danielle Williams (Virginia Beach, Va./ Salem High School) also bested her previous time, finishing close behind Little in 20:24.72.

The women’s team as a whole finished seventh out of eight teams, while the men’s cross country faired a little better finishing sixth out of nine teams.

VCU sophomore Steve Walters (Virginia Beach, Va./ Green Run High School) led the men’s cross country team, finishing ninth out of 113 runners with a time of 24:49.86. VCU’s second fastest time was posted by junior Riad Oulad (Fontainbleau, France), who finished 39th with a time of 26:19.87.

Freshman plays big in Pinehurst

VCU freshman Matthew Brookbanks (West Midlands, England) scored a one-under par in his first collegiate tournament, leading the Rams to an 11th-place finish out of 20 teams at the Mid Pines Intercollegiate golf tournament in Pinehurst, N. C.

He shot 75 in the first round, 70 in the second and 72 in the final for a total of 215, finishing nine strokes behind tournament leader Chadd Cocco of St. Mary’s.

Junior Jens Fahbring (Sollentuna, Sweden) finished second among VCU golfers posting 1-over par. The tournament, held Sept. 11th-13th, was the season opener for VCU.

Rookie Rams earn honors

After leading VCU’s field hockey team to their first win of the season Sunday, freshman Nikki Lloyd (Kent, England) was named the Colonial Athletic Association’s Rookie of the Week. She was the first VCU player to earn the honor this season.

Lloyd, whose second career goal was her first game winner. She leads VCU in points with five on the year.

She was not the only Ram to win the honor in all sports however, as two volleyball players were named CAA rookie of the week back to back.

Freshmen Ana Luiza De Borja (Florianopolis, Brazil) and Elisa Kuehnel (Dresden, Germany) were awarded in the past two weeks, respectively.

Schedule change: Rams to play Spiders at home

The VCU men’s basketball team will host cross-town rivals University of Richmond Sat. Dec. 10 after the Spiders wished to switch locations due to scheduling conflicts.

A large quantity of Richmond home games scheduled caused the University to ask for the switch, which was originally scheduled to take place at the Robins Center. To compensate, the Rams will play the Spiders at U of R next season.

In other Rams basketball news, coach Jeff Capel is planning to raise money for Hurricane Katrina victims by participating in the Coaches Across America Care auction. He will offer hotel accommodations for two and tickets to the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament in March of 2006 as a CAA tournament package.
