Feel like you’re missing out on campus activities because you commute to school? Off-Campus Housing Services continues to co-sponsor a Commuter CoffeeBRAKE twice a month in the University Student Commons so students who live off-campus can pick up information pamphlets for activities and issues. Attendees are asked if they are indeed off-campus students, allowing them to voice their opinions by filling out a questionnaire and enjoy a cup of coffee or bagel.

Martha Harper, information services manager for the University Student Commons who attends the coffee breaks, said she and various organizations sponsor them to get information to students who may otherwise miss opportunities because they are not on campus very often.

“I get to talk to students and they get to know about off-campus services,” Harper said.

She said in April that about 50 to 60 students attend each CoffeeBRAKE while passing through the University Student Commons on their way to classes. The surveys they take provide insight for the university on a wide variety of subjects, from parking to the DVD rental machine that was recently installed.

“It’s a way to meet them, it’s a way to get to know what’s going on in their lives and find out how we can help them,” Harper said.

Wyatt Jackson, a computer science major, finds the coffee breaks easy to attend because of their convenient location and time.

“I like them because they serve for off-campus students,” Jackson said. “I’ve never been in a dorm so I think it’s good that someone is servicing off-campus students.”

Harper said that in addition to students passing by, there are also about 20 familiar students who attend almost every coffee break.

One of those students, Susan Thach, a math major, said she had seen a poster for the event in the parking garage, and has been coming ever since.

“(Students) should definitely come, it is worth it for the food, coffee and the surveys,” Thach said.

Harper said information about upcoming coffee breaks can be found on the housing services Web site or in the off-campus student handbook.
