I was taking advantage of our library’s temporary overnight hours one night last week, and a rare moment occurred – I felt a sense of community at VCU.
At a university the size of ours, it can be hard to meet people and form bonds between the 26,999 other students that share our space here in Richmond, but you get together a few people studying overnight in Cabell library, and a conversation happens.
This is what college is all about – staying up all night and debating the deeper questions of life. Who are we? Where are we headed? What’s up with our education system? Healthcare? Jobs?
This is the kind of conversation I hope to recreate on the Editorial pages of The Commonwealth Times as much as possible – a spontaneous, constantly evolving debate of ideas, solutions and ways to move our university, commonwealth and country forward.
Over the past academic year we’ve seen editorials and letters on topics ranging from Social Security to “sidewalk rage” – important subjects, all.
I’ve enjoyed being your Editorials editor the past few months, and – if the powers that be consent – I’ll see you back here in August for another informative, quirky and sometimes entertaining semester.
