How would you in your free time like to play “Halo 2” or “Street Fighter 3: Third Strike”? If so, then you might be interested in joining the Video Game Club of VCU.
“I am not only looking for VCU students but friends of VCU students or anyone interested in playing old and new video games,” said Robin Palm, the club’s president. “We have really been active this semester by hosting some small-game tournaments among VCU students.”
Games played include “Tekken 5,” “Marvel vs. Capcom 2,” “Soul Calibur 2,” “Capcom vs. SNK 2,” “Super Smash Brothers Melee,” “Madden 2005,” “Starcraft PC”and “Warcraft PC.”
In addition, the club last month sponsored the Virginia Mid-Atlantic Video Game Championship in which some 200 people participated.
“In the championship besides VCU students, we had people travel from New York City, Atlanta, Ga., and other states up and down the East Coast,” the president said.
Palm, a VCU graduate who now works at Capital One, described the club as a loose association of gamers involved in many different games, but the core of the group likes fighting games. The club, he said, provides its members opportunities to play with other players, sponsors competitive events and travels to other competitive events around the country.
Brandon Brown, a freshman undeclared major, said he enjoys being a part of the Video Game Club, and he now is learning to play “Capcom vs. SNK 2,” a fighting game that employs street fighters.
“The club,” he said, “is fun, something different and a place I feel comfortable coming to.”
Naomi Baker, a freshman art major, identified “Tekken 5″as her favorite 3-D fighting video game to play, and she likes being one of the few females in the club.
“I am a competitive player, and I like competing against the males in the club as well as in tournaments,” she said.
Palm said students, faculty and staff may join the club, and he encourages members of all groups to participate in its activities.
