Your Turn: Letters to the Editor

Longer library hours

Fellow students:

Since I have been involved in the Student Government, the students have repeatedly cried out for longer hours at the James Branch Cabell Library. This year, the library hours were extended from 12:00 a.m. to 2:00 a.m. Sunday through Thursday, but still the students have asked for more.

Your student government has heard your concerns and relayed them to the administration, and the administration is taking action. For the last three weeks of the 2005 spring semester, April 24th through May 13th, the library will be open continuously from 11:00 a.m. Sunday to 9:00 p.m. Friday as part of an experimental trial of a proposed “24/5” library hours plan – 24 hours a day, 5 days a week.

This will give administrators the opportunity to observe how much the students will actually use a 24-hour library as well as understand the full cost of running such an operation.

I would challenge you, the students, to prove that you do in fact need and will use such extended library hours in the coming weeks. Please feel free to contact myself or one of the student government staff members by going to www.vcu.edu/sga or e-mailing me at brewstermb@vcu.edu.

Sincerely,

Mark B. Brewster
