Senior Day at the Stuart C. Siegel Center proved to be just that on Sunday, as three of Virginia Commonwealth’s four seniors put up double-figures to lead the Rams to a hard fought 62-56 victory over George Mason.

The Rams (6-11 CAA, 10-16) came out with a great start with scoring contributions from all of their starters. In fact, a total of 31 of their 33 first half points were put up by the starters, with senior guard Meagan Evans leading the way with 10 points.

George Mason (7-10, 11-14) kept close to VCU the entire way by converting on the 3-point shots. The Patriots were led with 9-point contributions from both senior guard Lauren Hediger and sophomore forward Tracy Holness.

The second half provided more of a struggle as the Rams went scoreless during the first three and a half minutes. George Mason scored six straight points to tie the score with no answer from VCU. The Rams could finally take a breath as senior Meagan Evans went strong to the bucket and converted on the lay-up for the first points of the half.

“I really didn’t want us to lose the game, especially on Senior Day,” said Evans, a fifth year senior. She finished the game leading all scorers with 17 points.

Senior forward Maria Giovannetti, earned all of her points at the foul line, netting a career-high 12 free throws on 14 attempts.

“I came into today’s game with mixed emotions,” said Giovannetti. “I knew our players would step up to bring in the win.”

While Giovannetti was reaching a career high, senior forward Lauren Hogan was furthering a career high, registering her 21st career double-double with 11 points and 14 rebounds.

“We really needed to pull out a win today. Our momentum going into the last game of the season will feed off of this win,” Hogan said.

George Mason just couldn’t hold on as two of their starters fouled out with minutes to go in the half. They were led in scoring by sophomore forward Tracy Holness with 16 points, and junior guard Jen Daniels with 14 points.

The Rams head to North Carolina this week for its final regular season game, as they take on UNC Wilmington Thursday at 7 p.m.

Hogan, the team captain, assured, “We’re going to hand UNCW a loss on a silver platter.”
