Your Turn: Letters to the Editor

To the Editor:

I don’t know if you have noticed that Lyz Holder’s Feb. 17 cartoon – in which American flag is drenched in blood – is anti-American.
Now, I don’t care if you blast Bush administration in every issue (which you do). Frankly, I just might agree with what you have to say about Bush.
But you must realize that the American flag represents more than Bush or corporate greed in America.
To me, the flag represents an opportunity to do better in my life. In addition, it’s very hypocritical of you to disrespect the flag when you publish your work under its protection.
You must apologize.

Sincerely,
Monty Kahlon

Editor’s reply: You are correct that the flag stands for more than corporate greed – and that’s exactly why cartoons like Holder’s are there to remind us. Controversial ideas are protected by freedom of speech so that informed citizens of a functioning democracy can draw from a full range of ideas when making decisions. Our Constitution – not the flag – provides this protection through the First Amendment. We hope you’ll take advantage by writing in the future.
