The South Asian Student Association – one of three Asian student groups at VCU – has high hopes for this semester.
Amit Bhatnagar, sophomore psychology major and co-president of SASA, suggested that better student participation would help his group’s future plans.
“Our goals are to get people to come out to events,” he said. “We haven’t been as organized as we all would like it to be, so we strive to make it more organized and well-planned so people will come to our events.”
Started in 2002 for students of Bangladeshi, Indian, Bhutan, Nepalese, Pakistani and Sri Lankan cultures, the group encourages students of all backgrounds to participate and interact with South Asian students on campus.
Even though many haven’t heard much from them, Bhatnagar was confident in December about a successful future for the SASA program.
“This program has helped me get to know more people around campus, and it has brought unity within the South Asian community,” he said. “It hasn’t put that much stress on us, but this semester with all the planned events I’m sure it will keep us busy.”
