Your Turn: Letters to the Editor

To the Editor:

This week the Student Government Association launched its “Where is the Love??” charity to collect donations for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault.

Unfortunately, these issues affect millions of women around the globe. According to national statistics, every 45 seconds another woman has been brutally assaulted. Please help us raise awareness in our effort. Students need to know that these women need their help, and they can do so in several ways.

We are collecting monetary donations as well as old, broken or unwanted cell phones. The monetary donations will be immediately directed to the YWCA center for domestic violence and sexual assault victims in Richmond. The donated cell phones will be sent off to a company that will refurbish and redistribute them to

these victims. Each cell phone will be fully equipped with a tracking device so that these women will have the confidence of security throughout their lives.

We have our table in the Student Commons every day from 3-7 p.m. On Feb. 23 we will have our finale from 12-1 p.m. outside in the Student Commons Plaza. At the finale we will have live singers, vendors, and the VCU Police will be assisting us in talking to the students.

We would like to invite you to our finale on Feb. 23rd from 12-1pm. Thank you for your cooperation in helping us in our cause.

Regards,

To the Editor:

Another year has passed, and another election is ready to take place. The Student Government Association needs you and every student to take an active role in their student government. We want to make this university a better institution so that any issue a student may have will be understood and dealt with accordingly.

This semester is a very exciting time, as well as an important time for the university’s upcoming head policy-making leaders. You decide! Not only will there be 25 available seats for new Senators, but there will also be the election of a new student body president, as well as a vice president and executive director of university relations taking place simultaneously.

It is very important that the upcoming elected student cabinet be the majority accepted candidates, so vote! You can make the difference just by voting!

Every position is available to those who meet the minimum GPA requirements of a 2.0. From there, it is the road of campaigning and eventually the eager wait for the results. Applications can be found at the SGA office, as well as online at the SGA elections website.

The last two information sessions will be held on February 21 at 5:00p.m. and February 22 at 5:30 p.m. If you have any questions, comments, or concerns about the election or anything in reference to the SGA, please feel free to contact us through the SGA website.

This is your chance to speak out and to be heard – not only by the SGA, but by the entire student body. You are our future. Help us prove it.

Respectfully,

Justin A. Greene
