Dining disgrace
When the student-organized Union for Student Rights decided in 1999 to kick out the McDonald’s that once graced the halls of our Student Commons, one wonders what they thought might replace the golden arches.
Today VCU students are able to choose from a much wider variety of food selection – but have you seen the prices? Compared to what one might find off-campus, the quality is less than extraordinary, yet the one company that manages food services on VCU’s campus – Aramark – seems happy to charge as if it were.
Let’s form a new USR and get VCU to lease out space in the Commons to competing businesses that would truly benefit students by providing the best service at the lowest prices.
Whatever money VCU is making from giving Aramark a monopoly could easily be recovered in the he form of the high leases businesses would certainly be willing to pay for the right to cater to VCU’s 27,000-strong student body.
