CD Review: Goldfinger’s “Disconnection Notice”

Goldfinger’s newest addition to the music scene – “Disconnection Notice” – on Maverick records hit stores Feb. 15. The album employs some new styles from the modern rock spectrum, but still contains about six songs of their classic pop, punk and ska-type sound. John Feldmann, the lead singer of Goldfinger, explains, “On the third album, we started to finally figure out our sound, and now we’ve figured it out even more.” Some help with their sound has come from Feldmann’s experiences in writing songs and producing bands who use varied styles such as Good Charlotte, Story of the Year, and The Used. The influence of these bands is most noticeable on the first six tracks of the album. “My Everything,” the first and hardest track on the album, shows the listener from the very beginning exactly what Goldfinger’s new sound is all about. Using rough rhythmic guitar and a heavy drumbeat one can sense a difference from their other albums. This venturous style, while not influenced by any one band in particular, shows that Goldfinger’s sound has been stirred by mainstream rock. Track 3, “Oceansize,” shows a style of voice tracking and overlapping very reminiscent of Good Charlotte’s first album. The subject matter of the album stretches from love, to animal rights, to politics, and uses lyrics that while depending on your mood can sound “sing-songy” or even irritating in the midst of the music. However, rest assured that the lyrics are meaningful. For example, “Behind the Mask” expresses Feldmann’s disappointment in what he had been led to believe by the government before he turned to animal rights and veganism. “All my life I’ve done what I’ve been asked. So who is right? The one behind the mask.” If you are expecting a Goldfinger album that sounds like their older more traditional punk roots, you have got another thing coming. Goldfinger is definitely morphing into something more composite on this album, and while it’s hard to define exactly what makes it tick, it’s easy to simply enjoy the ride.
