Ode to a sweater

Ah yes, it’s the holiday season again, and that means it’s time for my favorite holiday apparel: holiday sweaters.

These holiday sweaters are an annual occurrence that you can set your clock to. The patterns are simple, and the fabric is wool. My all-time favorite sweater is the quintessential classic: the “pilgrims sitting down for the first Thanksgiving feast” sweater.

The only thing more classic – and hilarious – than the sweaters are the people wearing them! From aunts who show up 90 minutes early for Thanksgiving dinner to 70-year-old women at church, one thing is for sure: it takes a special kind of person to pull off the holiday sweater.

But the most amazing thing is how persistent these people are. They never once miss a holiday. Ever. These sweaters sit in their closet for the entire year. Then, on that particular holiday when they can wear the sweater, they pull it out of their dresser as if it were a gun coming out of a holster.

They don their large sweater, grab the TV Guide, sit themselves down on the recliner and get ready to have some real holiday fun. And when I say holiday fun, I mean watching the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.

Yes, this season we all can appreciate the old proverbial holiday sweater because it brings us all together – mainly to stare, but together nonetheless. Thank you holiday sweaters, because without you we would be missing the cornerstone of the holiday season.
