Being a resident of Virginia all my life, I’m sure I’ll be correct in saying that ol’ man winter definitely hit us hard this year. Each week there was a chance of having some type of snow flurry or snowstorm. Temperatures seemed to be the lowest of low and winds added to this coldness. However, I’m not here to write about our Virginia weather, for I’m not a meteorologist, but there’s one thing I’ve noticed around campus. Whenever the weather gets a little nicer and temperatures are a tad bit higher, people seem to think it’s time to pull out the summer gear!
It’s lovely for us to have a few days out of the week where we do not have to carry an umbrella or wear our heavy winter coats. What people fail to realize is that just because the weather channel calls for a high of 60 degrees, doesn’t mean that sandals and shorts are a necessity.
Just a few weeks ago we had a few nice days where I was able to wear a jacket instead of a coat, but I saw certain individuals wearing tank tops, mini skirts and capris as if they were at the beach in the middle of July. I stand to be corrected, but didn’t spring just begin March 21 and doesn’t summer begin in late June?
I admit, I myself was a bit tired of having to wear the long johns and Timberland boots, but it’s way too soon to pull out the summer attire.
I understand a short-sleeved shirt, but halter tops and flip-flops are not acceptable at this time of the year despite the 60 degree to 70 degree weather.
It may be that the individuals I’ve seen aren’t use to Virginia weather, but just to let you know, one day it could be 65 degrees and the next it could be 42 degrees, so please give the seasons time to change. Maybe you are from California or Florida and just aren’t able to adjust, but don’t you feel a little out of place when everyone else is wearing jeans and sweaters? This doesn’t mean wrap a scarf around your neck, put on some gloves and keep on the sandals (this may sound crazy but I have seen it around campus). It’s not cute and most likely you’ll be the one coughing and sneezing in class.
So now that spring has officially arrived, I expect to see many students wearing short-sleeved shirts, skirts (not mini) and things of that nature. I must remind you to please keep in mind the content of this article and please govern yourselves accordingly…it’s not summertime yet!
