Mobile Munchies gives healthy alternative to Common’s deep fried fare
Feeling not so healthy these days? Did the Commons run out of veggie burgers? Are you beginning to wonder just what’s in these “veggie” burgers? Mobile Munchies, could be the healthy alternative you’ve been looking for. Not only do the owners list all their ingredients, so you aren’t kept guessing, but they guarantee all the food is fresh and made directly by them.

John and Kat, founders and the sole employees of mobile munchies, stand behind their yummy foods and good business. “Once you go into business for yourself, you’ll never work another day,” said Kat. Obviously being happy with your profession has a positive effect on your performance because Mobile Munchies rakes in the customers. I could hardly get close enough to the booth to ask Kat any questions.
There are many reasons why Mobile Munchies is so popular among students.
“It’s kind people, kind food, there’s nothing else you could want from a Munchie Mobile,” said John Comstocks, a junior studying marketing.
When a fried chicken sandwich and a bag of chips doesn’t cut it, and you’re not in the mood for a big meal at Hibbs, you can go to Mobile Munchies and choose from a variety of vegetarian or healthy grilled chicken sandwiches and wraps. “It’s healthy, it’s convenient and it’s a great atmosphere,” said Shayla Jackson, a junior studying marketing. In addition to nourishing and appetizing food, the cart also carries a wide variety of interesting fruit drinks.
“It’s wholesome food and it’s not takeout so it’s a good alternative. You know, it’s not Taco Bell,” said Corey Campbell, a psychology major. In accordance with their concern for the environment, Kat and John give you 50 cents off if you request a biodegradable cup (which you should recycle).
Friendly and personable service also draws in customers. There is always music playing and John and Kat are always upbeat. During my time at Mobile Munchies I noticed that they new many of their customers by name.
“You can come in and get good food and talk to people who know the music scene because I’m really into music and they have their own studio and band. Plus for $6 I can get a wrap and give a good tip for karma,” said Smiley Ruffin, an undeclared freshman.
This is a nice change from the automatic “thank you’s” that you get at the other dining facilities around VCU. “The people in the commons hate their jobs, it’s friendlier here,” said Jackson.
In their life outside of Mobile Munchies, John and Kat play in a band called “One.” They are a fairly new band and tend to play reggae.
