In Western society, particularly in America, people tend to tout an artificial supremacy over other cultures because we have “free will” and “liberty.” Although institutional forms of slavery still exists through sexual slavery, the prison system and forced labor, state-sanctioned slavery is no longer in existence. People have rights and privileges protected by constitutions, law enforcement agencies and judicial courts.
As I’ve grown, I’ve come to better appreciate the significance of Black History Month. I can (and have) defended its presence, explained its necessity and advocated for its expansion, as have many others before me. Unfortunately, a hazy apathy holds the monthlong memorial back from being as meaningful and effective as it can be.
Once you get into your daily routine here, it’s sometimes easy to forget that VCU is a large, heavily populated university. When VCU provides a service to students, particularly a free service, it’s not just a couple hundred students who benefit; it’s thousands of students.
Students can expect construction on the Monroe Park campus to continue in 2014 with improvements to Cabell library, construction of two new dorms and at least four other projects already slated.
The beginning of spring semester is always more hectic and aggravating than the beginning of fall semester.
