David Hellstrom, director of education and training for The BACCHUS and GAMMA Peer Education Network, an organization focused on health and safety initiatives for universities, presented “The Real Buzz: The Truth About Campus Alcohol” for National Collegiate Alcohol Awareness week.

His presentation encouraged alcohol awareness, and every Greek organization member, student-athlete and resident assistant was required to attend his presentation.

The Commonwealth Ballroom in the University Student Commons was filled to capacity, with little to no standing room. Some students were asked to leave because there was no room.

The five stages of alcohol impairment
As you’re drinking, these are the first things to go:
Judgment Decision-making skills
Muscles Speech, hearing, motor skills
Emotions Crying, anger, maturity
Memory Blackouts
Paralysis *Loss of involuntary muscles(lungs, heart, etc.)* alcohol poisoning (risk of death)
Alcohol facts:
A 120-pound woman can reach the deadly alcohol-poisoning blood alcohol level after 9 or 10 drinks.
A 180-pound man can reach that level after 14 or 15 drinks.
50 percent of VCU students had 0-4 drinks the last time they went out.
