President Bush and former President Clinton both swept into Virginia Friday to fire up support in the tightening Senate race. Bush helped raise $550,000 for Sen. George Allen during a reception at the Science Museum of Virginia, while Clinton raised $500,000 for rival Jim Webb during an event in Northern Virginia.

Bush told the audience, which paid $500 for the reception and $5,000 for a photo with the president, that the best way to protect Americans is to stay on the offensive. He criticized Democrats’ opposition to a continued military occupation in Iraq.

“That’s why they’re the party of cut and run,” Bush said. “That’s why the United States will stand with our allies in Iraq.

Allen dodged positioning himself on the war but later said the U.S. “must adjust” tactics in Iraq.

Democratic rival Jim Webb joined Clinton Thursday evening for a fundraising event at the home of former Virginia Gov. and Sen. Chuck Robb in McLean. Webb healed a rift with Clinton, whose two terms in office he had previously called corrupt.
