PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Drexel beat the Rams Sunday 1-0.

Drexel’s Pat McCaffery converted a penalty shot in the 12th minute of play to score the game’s only point.

Gerson Dos Santos (Sao Paulo, Brazil) was the only Ram to get a shot on goal during Sunday’s game against Drexel.

VCU is 2-2 in the CAA and 4-7 in the regular season.

NEWARK, Del. – VCU took the win during Friday’s game 3-2 against Delaware after tying the first half.

In the second half, VCU scored two points to Delaware’s one for the win.

All three of VCU’s points were consecutive, starting with Pat Viray’s (Reston/South Lakes HS) unassisted goal in the 14th minute on a quick turnaround shot.

In the second half, Evan Morris (Springfield/Byram Hills HS) assisted Forsan Asad-Radwan (Amman, Jordan) from 15 yards out. Matthijs Maruanaya (Alkmaar, Netherlands) picked up a turnover and scored from 10 yards out.

Women’s soccer

RICHMOND – VCU beat Drexel 3-1 Sunday in their fifth straight win of the season and fourth CAA win, earning the Rams an undefeated conference record so far.

Leigh Anthony (Fredericksburg/W.T. Woodson HS) gave a corner kick to Hayley Moorwood (Auckland, New Zealand), who returned the ball to Anthony for a sly first point in the 14th minute of play.

In the 23rd minute, Moorwood kicked a 20-yard free kick, curving her shot around Drexel’s goalkeeper Kaitlin Bond for VCU’s second point.

Drexel’s only point of the game was scored by Aleka Yiantsos in the last three minutes of the first half, when she tripped and shot her penalty kick around Lauren Hardison (Midlothian/Clover Hill HS).

Pernilla Jansson (Stockholm, Sweden) scored VCU’s final point as she was assisted by Stephanie Power (Dartmouth, Nova Scotia) in the second half, at the 76-minute mark.

Field hockey

RICHMOND – VCU was shut out Sunday by James Madison University for the Rams’ ninth straight loss of the season.

17th-ranked JMU stomped the Rams 3-0, taking 14 shots on Brittany LoVullo (Williamsville, N.Y.), who managed to save three.

VCU was allowed two shots the whole game, only one of which was on goal.

Melissa Walls opened up the scoring on a penalty stroke in the first half. In the second half, Ashley Walls and Meghan Bain scored within six minutes of each other.

Ashley Cadwallader and Nikki Lloyd (Kent, England) hit VCU’s only

two shots.

NEWARK, Del. – VCU lost Friday to the University of Delaware 2-4, giving up two points to the Blue Hens in each half.

Ashley Cadwallader (Fairfax/Fairfax HS) assisted Rebecca Sullivan’s (Fredericksburg/Stafford) shot just inside the circle for the first score of the game at the 13th minute mark.

In the second half, Vicky Smith (Rumson, New Jersey) passed a ball in front of the net to Emilie Osinga (Aerdenhout, Netherlands) for the Rams’ second and last point of the match.

Delaware’s final point came eight minutes before the whistle when Molly Burke put in an unassisted shot from the penalty corner.

Volleyball

NEW YORK – The Rams left the Long Island Blackbird Challenge Saturday afternoon with a 2-1 record.

In the first match, which was played Friday, VCU lost to Long Island 1-3 although VCU out hit .181 to

LIU’s .168.

On Saturday, VCU played two games and won both, first against South Dakota State 3-1, and then shut out Sacred Heart later in the day 3-0.

Against South Dakota State, setter Cat Juson (Long Beach, California) provided 50 assists, 11 digs, and six aces.

Ana Luiza de Borja (Florianopolis, Brazil) hit .333 in the contest, collecting 19 kills.

When playing Sacred Heart, the Rams hit for a total of .337 against Sacred Heart’s .020. Cat Juson and Shannon Keebaugh (Reynoldsburg, Ohio) led the team with 20 and 16

aces, respectively.

VCU is 9-8 in the season and 3-4 in the conference.

Men’s tennis

CHARLOTTESVILLE – Junior Damien Lacombe (Perigueux, France) advanced Sunday to the finals at the U.Va. Open by a pair of defaults but lost to USC’s Oren Motevassel 6-3 and 6-2.

VCU’s Arnaud Le Cloerec (Plouhinec, France), Petr Olsak (Novy Jicin, Czech Republic) and Alex Israel (Marseille, France) fell in the quarterfinals.
